Homemade Halloween Treat: Peanut Butter Cups for Dogs
The best part about Halloween is the candy! Even if you’re too old to go trick-or-treating, it’s still a perfect excuse to stock up on sweets—and maybe sneak a few before the first little ghost or goblin rings your doorbell.
Unfortunately, most Halloween treats—especially chocolate-covered raisins or standard candy bars—are strictly off-limits for dogs. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which can be toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. But that doesn’t mean your pup has to sit out the spooky season! With a little creativity, you can make festive, safe, and delicious homemade treats they’ll love.

A Dog-Safe Twist on a Classic
We’ve reimagined the iconic peanut butter cup using carob—a naturally sweet, caffeine-free alternative derived from the carob tree’s pods. Carob looks remarkably like chocolate but has a milder, slightly earthy flavor—and it’s completely safe for dogs.
You can find carob chips at most natural food stores or online at furpetvo.com. Look for unsweetened, additive-free varieties to keep things wholesome.

Recipe Details
- Yield: 12 treats
- Serving size: 1 treat per dog
- Prep time: 25 minutes
- Cooling time: 30 minutes
- Total time: 55 minutes

Step-by-Step Instructions
- Line your cupcake tin with liners.
- Melt 1 cup of carob chips and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil using a double boiler. (No double boiler? Fill a saucepan one-third full with water, bring to a gentle simmer, then nestle a heat-safe bowl on top—ensuring no steam escapes.) Whisk until smooth and glossy.
- Spoon 1 tablespoon of the melted carob mixture into each liner. Gently tap or shake the tin to level the layer and eliminate air bubbles.
- Freeze for 10 minutes until firm.
- Add 1 teaspoon of natural peanut butter to the center of each set carob base. Avoid overfilling—if the peanut butter is very runny, use less liquid to prevent swirling into the carob layer.
- Return the tin to the freezer for another 10 minutes.
- Melt the remaining 1 cup of carob chips and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil using the same method. Once smooth, spoon 1 tablespoon over each peanut butter layer, fully covering it.
- Shake gently to smooth the top, then freeze for 10 more minutes—or until completely firm.
- Pop the treats out of the liners and serve! Store extras in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 weeks.
