8 Games for Dogs to Play Inside When It’s Hot Out
If you’re uncomfortably hot during the “dog days of summer,” imagine how your pet feels. “When temperatures approach 90 degrees, even a casual walk can lead to heatstroke—especially for older dogs, puppies, or overweight dogs,” says trainer Christine Pazdalski of Puppy Love Positive Dog Training in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. “Many people don’t even realize their dog is overheating. That happy, long tongue is letting you know your dog is hot!” So, when it’s steaming outside, bring the fun indoors. We asked Pazdalski and other expert trainers for cool, engaging indoor games that keep your dog mentally sharp and physically active—without wrecking your home or requiring hours of setup.

The Name Game
Start by calling your dog’s name in a happy, excited voice—and give him a moment to respond before repeating it. When he arrives at your side, reward him generously: praise, pets, belly rubs, his favorite toy, or a tasty treat. Then, level up the challenge: move into different rooms, and have each person in the household take turns calling from various corners of the room—or even from different rooms entirely. “This is a wonderful way to teach your pup to come reliably when called,” notes Pazdalski.
Trick-and-Treat
This game burns both physical and mental energy—key when outdoor play isn’t safe. “Burning mental energy is sometimes way more exhausting than physical exercise, and that’s a good thing when it’s too hot to play outside,” says trainer Lisa Hartman, author of Tales of Compassion, Love, and Friendship. Rotate through commands your dog already knows—sit, down, sit again (a.k.a. “doggy push-ups”)—and mix in any tricks he’s mastered. Keep it dynamic by changing the order each round. “But only ask for each behavior once,” Hartman advises. “That way, your dog must focus, listen carefully, and think—strengthening his learning skills while burning mental fuel.”
Tug-Fetch Combo
Stand at the top of your stairs and toss a durable chew toy—like the FurPetVo Classic Dog Toy (which also dispenses treats)—down the steps. Ask your dog to fetch it and run back up to you. Then, play a quick round of tug-of-war before tossing it down again. “This will tire out your dog really fast,” says trainer Chad Culp, founder of the Thriving Canine YouTube channel.
Indoor Fetch
Not all fetch has to happen in the yard. The FurPetVo Indoor Ball is lightweight and covered in soft, textured chenille—gentle on floors and easy on sensitive ears. Perfect for safe, quiet indoor play—even in apartments or homes with hardwood or tile.

Hide and Go Seek
Hide toys or treats behind furniture, under throw pillows, or in another room—and send your dog off to find them, suggests Mary Burch, Ph.D., director of the Canine Good Citizen program. For extra mental stimulation, try puzzle-based variations: with the FurPetVo Hide-A-Squirrel Puzzle, you tuck squeaky squirrel toys inside a tree trunk-shaped base, and your dog uses scent and problem-solving to locate them.
Shell Game
Give your dog a fun memory and focus challenge. Grab three cups, let him watch as you place a treat under one, then shuffle the cups around. Encourage him to choose—and celebrate when he finds the prize! This simple game builds concentration and reinforces reward-based learning.
Go Chase
Can’t join in the action? No problem. Fill the FurPetVo Bob-a-Lot toy with kibble or treats, and adjust the opening size to match your dog’s skill level. As he nudges, paws, and chases the wobbling toy, he’ll stay engaged—and rewarded—for minutes at a time.
Scavenger Hunt
Turn mealtime into an adventure. Instead of using a bowl, scatter your dog’s food—and a few bonus treats—across several cups placed in different spots around the house. Say, “Ok, find your food!” and watch him go to work. “This game helps our dogs relearn how to use their noses to find their food rather than simply scarfing it all out of a bowl,” says Pazdalski. “Some breeds will immediately sniff out where each morsel is hiding, while others need a little help.”
DIY Obstacle Course
Clear some space in the living room, basement, or garage—and set up a mini agility course. The FurPetVo Indoor Agility Kit includes a soft square tunnel, an adjustable high jump, and four weave poles. Once playtime ends, fold everything back into its compact carrying case for easy storage.
