Your Pup Will Love These Carob-Covered Raspberry Cookies—Scout’s Honor!

It’s officially cookie season! To celebrate the release of the new Raspberry Rally cookie, we’ve created a dog-friendly version that’s both delicious and safe—covered in carob (a natural, chocolate-free alternative that’s non-toxic to dogs) and infused with real raspberry flavor.

Developed by cookbook authors and Trunk Pop Dinners co-founders Marge Perry and David Bonom, these treats use only pet-safe ingredients: unsweetened dried or freeze-dried raspberries for fruity brightness, and carob chips for that rich, cocoa-like finish—without the risks associated with chocolate.

This recipe is a playful twist on our popular Carob-Mint Cookies, inspired by another beloved classic—Thin Mints. Just like their human counterparts, these dog treats deliver crunch, depth, and a refreshing hint of fruit.

As with any new food introduced to your dog’s diet, always consult your veterinarian first—especially if your pup has allergies, sensitivities, or underlying health conditions.

Carob-Covered Raspberry Cookie Recipe

  • Yield: 12–15 cookies
  • Serving size: 1 cookie
  • Prep time: 30 minutes
  • Total time: 90 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons dried or freeze-dried unsweetened raspberries
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup plus 2 teaspoons whole wheat flour
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup unsalted chicken or beef broth
  • 6 drops natural red food dye
  • ¼ cup carob chips
  • 1 teaspoon canola oil

Supplies

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowls
  • Sealable plastic bag
  • Rolling pin
  • Icing spatula or butter knife
  • 1.5-inch round biscuit or cookie cutter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Crush or chop the raspberries and combine with both flours. If using freeze-dried raspberries, place them in a sealable plastic bag and roll gently with a rolling pin until pulverized into a fine powder. If using dried raspberries, finely chop them by hand.
  3. In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg with a fork. Measure out 2 tablespoons; discard the remainder.
  4. Add the broth and food dye to the egg mixture and stir well. Pour into the dry ingredients and mix until a rough dough forms. Wear gloves to avoid staining your hands with the dye.
  5. Knead the dough in the bowl 5–6 times until smooth and fully combined. Turn it onto a lightly floured surface and roll to ¼-inch thickness.
  6. Use the cookie cutter to stamp out shapes and transfer them to the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 25 minutes—or until firm and lightly golden. Remove from oven and cool completely before decorating.
  7. Place carob chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on medium power in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until fully melted. Stir in the canola oil until the mixture is smooth, glossy, and evenly blended.
  8. Using the spatula or knife, spread a thin, even layer of melted carob over the top of each cooled cookie. Let stand for 30 minutes to set before serving.

How to Store

For safety and freshness, refrigerate leftovers within one hour of preparation—and consume within three to four days. For longer storage, place cooled, undipped cookies in a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to one month. Dip and serve only as needed.

Feeding Tips & Safety Notes

Treats should never exceed 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake. For example, if your dog needs 600 calories per day, limit treats to no more than 60 calories. Dogs with weight concerns or health conditions—including fat sensitivities—may need even lower treat allowances.

This recipe was reviewed by a licensed veterinarian and is intended solely as an occasional treat—not a meal replacement. Overfeeding can lead to nutritional imbalances or digestive upset. Always monitor your dog for signs of intolerance, and consult your vet before introducing new foods.
