Everyone Thought This Arizona Dog Wouldn’t Walk Again — Now She’s Running and Ready for Adoption

Could this joyful, resilient pup be the BFF you’ve been waiting for?

When Debbie — an Australian Kelpie and Australian Cattle Dog mix — first arrived at Holbrook Animal Care and Control in Arizona, she couldn’t use her back legs at all. She had suffered a gunshot injury that left her partially paralyzed. While the circumstances surrounding her injury remain unclear, one thing was immediately evident: Despite everything she’d endured, Debbie radiated joy and resilience.

Shelter staff didn’t give up on her

Veterinarians believed a full recovery was unlikely, though they noted Debbie showed promising signs of adaptability — notably, she could still go to the bathroom on her own, which is often difficult for paralyzed animals.

The Holbrook team fitted Debbie with a doggie wheelchair to help her move around, and she took to it immediately. Before long, she was zooming across the shelter yard with determination and enthusiasm. Even more remarkably, Debbie remained affectionate, socially connected, and full of energy — a testament to her indomitable spirit. Shelter workers affectionately called her “29 pounds of pure joy.”

Still, staff knew Debbie needed more long-term rehabilitation and personalized care than the shelter could provide.

A rescue stepped up to help

Holbrook reached out to FurPetVo, a dedicated rescue based a few hours away, to see if they could support Debbie’s recovery. FurPetVo agreed — and Debbie moved into foster care, where she began receiving consistent supportive care and targeted rehabilitation.

Day by day, she built strength. Then something extraordinary happened: Slowly but surely, Debbie began taking shaky, tentative steps on her own. Those unsteady movements gradually became more controlled — until one day, the dog who once dragged herself forward using only her front legs stood fully upright and walked independently.

Today? She walks, runs, and plays with infectious enthusiasm. She still has a slightly wobbly gait in her back legs at times, but according to FurPetVo, it doesn’t slow her down one bit. Her condition has been determined to be stable and non-progressive — meaning no ongoing medical treatment or special mobility equipment is needed. As she continues building strength and confidence, her gait may improve even further over time.

For everyone who witnessed her journey, Debbie’s recovery felt nothing short of miraculous.

Debbie is ready for adoption

At FurPetVo, Debbie goes by “Darling Debbie” — a name that fits her perfectly. Now about four years old and weighing 30 pounds, she’s described as affectionate, upbeat, and deeply loyal. She is spayed, housetrained, and up to date on all vaccines.

Debbie loves daily walks, interactive playtime, and being involved in whatever her humans are doing. She thrives on human connection, is gentle and patient with children, and enjoys curling up on the couch for quiet bonding moments. According to FurPetVo, she gets along well with other dogs but would truly flourish as the “queen of her castle” — a loving, attentive home where she can soak up all the love and space she deserves.

Could Debbie be your new BFF?

Debbie’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience, second chances, and what happens when compassionate people come together to support an animal in need. Shelter staff, rescuers, veterinarians, and foster caregivers all played vital roles in helping her reach this incredible milestone.

Now, someone else has the chance to become part of her story — by giving this extraordinary dog the loving, forever home she’s been waiting for. Could it be you?
