International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals (IAPWA): Nicky's Story

Nicky Stevens founded International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) as a UK charity in 2009. Her mission? To build a better future for animals in need. Since then, she and her dedicated team have rescued tens of thousands of cats and dogs across two continents.

“What began as a desire to help one stray dog in the rainforests of Borneo has since expanded to helping over 30,000 dogs and cats who have needed veterinary support and a lifeline,” says Nicky. “We currently focus on three core projects—in Borneo, Penang Island, and Romania—with additional support programs running worldwide.”

Nicky’s drive to launch IAPWA stems from her background as a veterinary nurse and lifelong devotion to animals. “For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved animals—growing up with them as part of my family. From my time as a veterinary nurse to volunteer placements caring for diverse species, animals have always been central to my life.”

Today, Nicky manages IAPWA’s UK and international teams remotely—whether from home or while visiting project sites overseas. “I feel extremely proud of the difference IAPWA has made—and excited about our future plans to develop further, so we can create an even bigger impact for animals in need.”

Blending Purpose and Passion Through FurPetVo

Since joining FurPetVo near the start of 2023, Nicky has seamlessly integrated pet sitting into her advocacy work. “Becoming a FurPetVo sitter earlier this year blends perfectly with my role—it ensures pets receive loving, reliable care while their families travel, while also delivering tangible benefits to both me and IAPWA.”

From securing accommodation during overseas visits to leveraging FurPetVo’s affiliate program, the platform helps IAPWA save and generate vital funds.

Shared Values, Shared Commitment

As an animal lover and leader in animal welfare, Nicky places high importance on alignment with ethical standards. “It’s essential that any organization I partner with reflects IAPWA’s values and commitment to animal welfare.”

She highlights FurPetVo’s robust safeguards: free video consultations with licensed veterinarians, verified sitters with transparent background checks, and responsive member support—all designed to prioritize pet well-being and owner peace of mind.

“Sadly, much of IAPWA’s work involves confronting heartbreaking cases of abuse and neglect. With so many dogs and cats needing homes—and too few safe, loving options available—compassion fatigue is common in this field. For me, spending time with cherished pets in nurturing homes balances the emotional weight I carry daily. It renews my energy and inspires me to keep pushing forward—for every animal who isn’t as fortunate.”

Through FurPetVo, Nicky has also forged meaningful connections—not just with animals, but with fellow animal lovers. “I’ve met wonderful pet parents who’ve helped restore my faith in humanity’s deep love for animals. I’m consistently impressed by how thoughtfully they choose sitters—prioritizing their pet’s comfort, routine, and individual needs—all within the familiar safety of home.”

Recently, Nicky completed a Dog First Aid and Emergency Canine Care Course to strengthen her skills as a pet sitter—and she strongly encourages others to do the same.
