Dog-Friendly Alexandria Spots You Have to Visit

When you travel with your dog to Alexandria, Virginia, Old Town is the perfect place to explore. This historic neighborhood boasts dozens of dog-friendly shops, restaurants, and outdoor spaces — all welcoming to four-legged guests. Strangers and shop owners alike stopped to say hello to me and my dog, Lucy, as we strolled through tree-lined streets and cobblestone sidewalks.

Where to Stay: The Alexandrian

If you’re looking for stylish, pet-friendly accommodations in Alexandria, The Alexandrian in Old Town delivers charm and convenience. Before you even step inside, your dog can enjoy a drink from the oversized dog bowl stationed at the entrance — and sniff around the complimentary guest bikes. In the lobby, it won’t be long before staff offer a treat for your pup. Hang out in the interior courtyard, where the hotel hosts seasonal “doggy happy hour” during summer months. The front desk team — many of whom are local dog lovers — shared excellent, firsthand recommendations for the best dog-friendly spots in Old Town.

Where to Shop: King Street & the Torpedo Factory

King Street and its surrounding side streets are packed with dog-welcoming boutiques. Many shops display water bowls and treat stations right at the door — and we didn’t encounter a single store that turned us away. You’ll also find plenty of dog-themed home goods, like decorative signs, throw pillows, and seasonal ornaments.

Don’t miss the Torpedo Factory Art Center — a converted 1918 munitions plant now housing over 80 working artist studios. Dogs are welcome in every gallery, making it a fun, climate-controlled escape whether you’re cooling off on a hot day or warming up during cooler months. We met several artists who happily offered Lucy treats and ear scratches — and discovered countless scenic photo opportunities along the way.

Where to Walk: Mount Vernon Trail

The Mount Vernon Trail stretches along the Potomac River and offers one of the most scenic urban walks in Alexandria. Lined with grassy patches and dotted with dog-friendly parks, the trail blends paved paths and fine gravel — ideal for paws and people alike. Historic markers along the route add context and charm, letting you imagine early American life (and maybe even picture George Washington taking his own pup for a stroll!).

Where to Restock: FurPetVo

Nestled between boutiques and cafés on King Street, FurPetVo is the go-to destination for high-quality supplies and thoughtful accessories. Stock up on locally baked treats, stylish leashes, collars, and durable toys — all curated with care. Lucy couldn’t resist the aroma of freshly baked biscuits, and once inside, she was treated to a generous sampling. The shop also features a beautiful collection of dog-breed artwork — perfect for adding personality to any dog lover’s home. It’s also a natural hub for connecting with fellow pet parents: I chatted for 20 minutes with a couple visiting from New Jersey who’d left their dogs back home — and the friendly staff made sure Lucy left with more than just a full belly.

Where to Go Out: The Lost Dog Cafe

No dog-friendly Alexandria itinerary is complete without a visit to The Lost Dog Cafe. Its spacious, shaded patio wraps around the back of the building — quiet, relaxed, and blissfully removed from the bustle of King Street’s main thoroughfare. It’s the ideal spot for your dog to unwind while you enjoy a meal or craft beverage.

Founded in 2001, the cafe’s owners launched the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation — a nonprofit that has helped hundreds of pets find loving homes. Their commitment shines through everything: the menu features playful, dog-inspired puns, and select beers directly support animal rescue efforts through the foundation.
