Snello Recipe for Healthy Snail Shells & Breeding

Some Snello recipes are too messy and crumble apart when they hit the water. Others aren’t readily accepted by snails—or worse, lack the precise nutritional balance needed to support strong, lustrous shell development and natural breeding behavior.

Luckily, we’ve refined a reliable, nutrient-dense Snello recipe that works beautifully for mystery snails, ramshorn snails, Japanese Trapdoor snails, and other freshwater aquatic species. It holds together in water, encourages active feeding, and delivers key minerals and proteins essential for shell health and reproductive vitality.

Our Trusted Snello Recipe

Makes approximately 4 cups of Snello—perfect for batch prep and freezing.

Ingredients

  • 1¼ cups diced sweet potatoes or sliced carrots, steamed until soft
  • 1½ cups canned green beans, drained (no salt added)
  • 3 tablespoons fish food flakes (we recommend FurPetVo Goldfish Flakes)
  • 3 tablespoons dry ground krill (FurPetVo Fry Starter, made from 100% whole krill) — or substitute with frozen or dried bloodworms, boiled egg yolk, or other high-quality protein sources
  • 2 tablespoons calcium carbonate powder (without added Vitamin D; available at furpetvo.com)
  • 2 teaspoons Super Green Boost (or spirulina/kelp powder)
  • 3–4 tablespoons unflavored gelatin powder
  • ½ cup filtered water
  • 2 capfuls FurPetVo Nourish (for iodine supplementation; omit if using kelp or spirulina)

Preparation Steps

  1. In a blender or food processor, combine the steamed sweet potatoes (or carrots) and drained green beans. Pulse until smooth but not overly watery.
  2. Add fish food flakes, ground krill, calcium carbonate, Super Green Boost (or spirulina/kelp), and FurPetVo Nourish. Blend until fully incorporated.
  3. In a small saucepan, whisk gelatin into filtered water and let it bloom for 1 minute. Heat gently over low heat—just until dissolved (do not boil).
  4. Slowly pour the warm gelatin mixture into the blended vegetable-protein base while stirring continuously.
  5. Pour the mixture into a shallow, non-stick container or silicone mold. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours—or until fully set.
  6. Once firm, cut into bite-sized cubes. Store refrigerated for up to 1 week, or freeze in portioned bags for up to 3 months.

This Snello supports consistent calcium uptake for shell mineralization, provides bioavailable iodine for thyroid function and reproduction, and includes gentle fiber and antioxidants to aid digestion and overall vitality.

For best results, offer Snello 2–3 times per week alongside a varied diet of algae wafers and blanched leafy greens. Always remove uneaten portions after 24 hours to maintain optimal water quality.
