Why Grooming Mistakes Matter
Regular grooming keeps your dog healthy, but common mistakes can cause skin irritation, coat damage, and infections.
1. Using Human Shampoo
Human shampoo has a different pH than dog products. Dogs skin is 6.2-7.4 pH while human skin is 5.5. Using human shampoo strips natural oils and disrupts the acid mantle.
Fix: Use dog-specific shampoo. For sensitive skin, choose oatmeal-based formulas.
2. Bathing Too Frequently
Most dogs only need a bath every 4-6 weeks. Over-bathing removes essential oils.
Fix: Use waterless shampoo between baths.
3. Neglecting Ear Cleaning
Ears accumulate wax and moisture, especially in floppy-eared breeds. Clean weekly with vet-approved ear cleaner.
4. Cutting Nails Too Short
The quick is painful to cut and bleeds heavily. Trim small amounts at 45-degree angles. Keep styptic powder handy.
5. Shaving Double-Coated Breeds
Huskies, Shepherds, and Retrievers have insulating double coats. Shaving causes permanent damage and sunburn risk.
6. Skipping Dental Care
80% of dogs show dental disease by age three. Brush 2-3 times weekly with dog-safe toothpaste.
7. Brushing Only the Surface
Use a slicker brush to reach the undercoat where mats form. Work in sections from skin outward.
Build a Routine
Set a weekly schedule: brushing, ear checks, nail trims, teeth cleaning. Start early with puppies for positive associations.
