Must-Read Discussion: Sit Etiquette

@Nrgeec sparked an insightful conversation about basic sit etiquette—and it resonated deeply across the community. Members shared thoughtful perspectives from both sitter and pet parent viewpoints.

One standout contribution came from @Systaran:

“I would recommend being extremely clear about what sitters can use—or not use. On almost every sit I’ve done, I’ve been told to help myself to anything (literally anything, including wine or alcohol). However, I never do. I prefer to buy my own food and wine. I’m actually rather picky about my olive oil and don’t use the homeowner’s—especially since theirs is typically much less expensive than mine (some sitters can afford our more premium tastes). Also keep in mind some people may not know which items are high-end or specialty.

On arrival at sits, I’m often left with expired food or produce past when I’d eat it—all of that goes straight in the bin. I certainly don’t replace things I throw out.

If I’m on a longer sit, I bring my own laundry supplies. However, if it’s a short sit where I might do just one or two loads, I don’t feel I should have to bring my own detergent. When I wash sheets or towels at the end of a sit, I do use the homeowner’s detergent. If there’s a tumble dryer, I’ll use it—it wouldn’t occur to me not to, unless explicitly asked not to.

Since all sits and homeowners are different, it’s best to be extremely clear about expectations upfront.”

It’s a powerful reminder that open, respectful communication before the sit begins makes all the difference.
