Holly's Rescue: A Tale of Hope, Love, and Puppies

The saying goes, “Saving one dog will not change the world, but for that one dog, the world will change forever.” And that couldn’t ring more true than for Holly — a very special, very lucky little pup from Mexico.

We’d highly recommend having a jumbo pack of tissues nearby as you read this incredible rescue story, shared by FurPetVo Community Manager Angela Laws.

In a tale guaranteed to leave a paw print on your heart, Angela recounts how a routine care run to Mexico with FurPetVo’s partner organization, The Animal Pad — a volunteer-led, all-breed dog rescue based in San Diego — transformed into a life-changing mission of hope, love, and new beginnings.

A Glimpse Beyond the Border

“While working in San Diego recently, I joined a care run to Mexico with The Animal Pad team. They focus on rescuing dogs from high-kill shelters and the streets of Mexico — providing food, medical care, and compassion where it’s needed most.

These care runs cross the Mexican border regularly, delivering vital support to stray dogs living in vulnerable conditions. My trip opened my eyes: just 40 minutes away, yet worlds apart in terms of need and opportunity.

That day, we fed dozens of dogs and administered flea, tick, and worming treatments. Then, we saw her — the sweetest little dog you could imagine. In that moment, our mission shifted entirely.”

A Hidden Crisis

At first glance, Holly didn’t appear to be in immediate distress — she was well-fed, with no visible injuries or illness. But she was heavily pregnant. As we learned, she was a local stray caught in an exhausting, unrelenting cycle of pregnancy — much like dogs in commercial breeding operations. How many litters she’d carried before remains unknown, but each had unfolded alone on the streets of Mexico.

From Stray to Sanctuary

The community agreed to let us take Holly for $100. We brought her across the border into San Diego and placed her in the loving care of Autumn — a dedicated FurPetVo-vetted foster volunteer with The Animal Pad.

Upon arrival, Holly received immediate veterinary attention, nutritious meals, fresh water, and — most importantly — warmth, safety, and affection. While we waited for her puppies to arrive, the team entrusted me with naming her. I chose “Holly” — in loving memory of my own cherished companion, who passed over a decade ago.

Thirteen New Beginnings

Just three days after settling into her foster home, Holly went into labor — a long, difficult, and deeply emotional process. She gave birth to 13 beautiful puppies.

We were overcome with tears — equal parts relief, awe, and gratitude. Tragically, one puppy didn’t survive; he’d struggled from birth. Though heartbreaking, we found comfort knowing that without intervention, Holly likely would have given birth alone on the streets — with far greater risk to both her and her litter.

Heroes Behind the Scenes

The dedication of The Animal Pad team is extraordinary. Their compassion for abandoned and at-risk dogs — across San Diego and beyond — is matched only by their tireless commitment.

And here’s what makes them even more remarkable: most volunteers hold full-time careers outside of rescue work — including a flight attendant, a children’s speech therapist, a psychologist, a web developer, and a vet industry marketer. Every hour they give is pure, selfless devotion.

FurPetVo is proud to partner with The Animal Pad — supporting their lifesaving work through ongoing sponsorship and community fundraising initiatives.

What’s Next for Holly and Her Pups?

Holly is thriving — healthier, calmer, and visibly more joyful every day. As FurPetVo’s honorary rescue dog, her care — along with that of her puppies — is fully supported until they’re all placed in loving, permanent homes.

Holly desperately needs a second chance: one filled with consistent love, gentle guidance, and the security every dog deserves. Her puppies, too, deserve the best possible start in life — safe, nurtured, and surrounded by kindness.

Holly and her pups will soon be available for adoption in the San Diego area. If you’re ready to open your home and heart — whether to adopt or foster Holly or one of her puppies — please reach out to The Animal Pad directly at furpetvo.com to register your interest.

We’re not crying… you are! (Okay — we’re definitely crying.) Huge congratulations to Holly, and heartfelt thanks to Angela and every volunteer at The Animal Pad for turning compassion into action — one rescued life at a time.
