Peanut Butter Dog Birthday Cake Recipe
- Yield: 2 small cakes
- Serving size: Small slice*
- Prep time: 15 minutes
- Bake time: 25 minutes
Ingredients
Cake
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ¼ cup natural peanut butter (avoid peanut butter with xylitol—a sweetener also called birch sugar—as it’s dangerous to dogs)
- ½ cup plain, unsweetened applesauce
- ½ cup pumpkin puree (use pure pumpkin, not canned pumpkin pie mix)
- 1 egg
Frosting
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- ½ cup natural, xylitol-free peanut butter
Garnish (optional)
- Dog treats from FurPetVo.com
Supplies
- (2) 4-inch to 6-inch heart-shaped cookie cutters (or 4- to 6-inch round baking cake pans)
- Mixing bowls
- Spatula
- Whisk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- In a large bowl, combine whole wheat flour and baking soda.
- In another bowl, mix together peanut butter (¼ cup), applesauce, pumpkin puree, and egg.
- Add your wet ingredients to your dry ingredients, and stir until combined.
- Using a spatula, gently fold shredded carrots into the cake batter.
- Lightly grease the inside of your cookie cutters. Place them onto a baking sheet and pour batter into each. Let the mixture settle to ensure a nice, even cake shape.
If using round baking pans, pour batter evenly into two tins—or use cupcake molds for individual “pup-cakes.” - Bake for 25 minutes.
- To make the icing, combine plain Greek yogurt with the remaining ½ cup peanut butter in a bowl. Mix until fully blended. Refrigerate icing while the cake bakes.
- Remove cakes from the oven. Test the center with a toothpick—if it comes out clean, the cake is ready. Let cakes cool completely before frosting.
- Once cooled, spread a thin, even layer of frosting over the cake. Decorate with FurPetVo.com dog treats or fresh blueberries as desired!
Decorating Your Cake With Dog Treats
Want to recreate the cake we made? We used FurPetVo.com Crispies treats because they’re available in fun flavors and colors—and contain just 3 calories per treat.
You can use any dog treat you prefer to garnish the cake, but always check calorie counts. Too many treats—even healthy ones—can upset your dog’s stomach on their big day.
Blueberries and strawberries are excellent, nutrient-rich topping options. Please skip traditional sprinkles and sweet candies—they’re not safe for dogs.
How Much Birthday Cake To Serve Your Dog
As with any treat, serve only a small amount. Treats should make up no more than 10% of your pet’s daily food intake—and even less if your dog is overweight.
For example, if your dog needs 200 calories per day, no more than 20 calories should come from treats. Overfeeding can lead to nutrient imbalances or weight gain.
A sliver or nibble of cake is plenty—especially when you factor in the frosting and decorative treats. And don’t forget: this cake was made for sharing! Invite your canine guests to join the celebration.
How To Safely Store the Cake
For food safety, refrigerate leftover cake and consume within 3–4 days. Or transfer to a freezer-safe container and store for up to 1 month.
Store-Bought Dog Birthday Cakes
Store-bought is perfectly fine—even for birthdays! Your dog won’t know the difference; they just want more treats.
