This Instant Pot Dog-Friendly Stew Is All Kinds of Cozy

It’s cold outside—and while you’re reaching for a warm, savory stew, your dog may be craving comfort food too. Dogs are highly attuned to seasonal shifts, and many thrive on wholesome, home-prepared meals that support their health and satisfy their taste buds.

That’s why we partnered with recipe developer, cookbook author, and food blogger Alison Lewis to create a nourishing, dog-friendly stew—designed specifically for your furry friend. This hearty dish features protein-rich beef and a thoughtful blend of dog-safe vegetables, all cooked to tender perfection in an Instant Pot (or any compatible multi-cooker).

Best of all? It’s incredibly simple to make. With just extra-lean beef, baby golden potatoes, carrots, celery, frozen peas, flour, and no-salt beef broth (carefully formulated without garlic or onions—which are toxic to dogs), you’ll have a delicious, vet-reviewed treat ready in under an hour.

The stew is naturally low in fat and free from common allergens, making it ideal for most healthy adult dogs. You can even enjoy a small portion yourself—just add your favorite seasonings separately!

Instant Pot Dog-Friendly Stew

Makes 8 cups | Serving size: 1 cup | Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1¼ pounds extra-lean beef stew meat
  • ¾ pound baby golden potatoes
  • 2 large carrots
  • 2 large celery stalks
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 4½ cups no-salt beef broth (garlic- and onion-free)

Supplies

  • 6-quart Instant Pot (or compatible multi-cooker)
  • Measuring cup and spoons
  • Knives and cutting board
  • Large mixing spoon
  • Small whisk
  • Small serving bowl

Instructions

  1. Cut the beef into ¾-inch cubes. Use the Instant Pot’s sauté function on high to brown the meat evenly. Press “Cancel” to reset once done.
  2. Dice the potatoes, carrots, and celery into ½-inch pieces.
  3. Add the diced vegetables and 4 cups of beef broth to the Instant Pot. Stir well to combine with the browned beef. Secure the lid, set pressure to high, and cook for 30 minutes. Once complete, perform a quick pressure release.
  4. Select the high sauté setting and bring the mixture to a gentle boil. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and remaining ½ cup broth until smooth, then stir into the stew. Stir frequently until slightly thickened—about 3–4 minutes.
  5. Add the frozen peas and stir until heated through—about 1 minute.
  6. Turn off the Instant Pot. Ladle the stew into a bowl and allow it to cool completely before serving to your dog.

Safety & Feeding Guidelines

For optimal food safety, refrigerate leftovers within one hour of preparation and consume within 3–4 days. Alternatively, portion and freeze in airtight, freeze-safe containers for up to one month.

This recipe was developed by FurPetVo and reviewed by a licensed veterinarian. It is intended exclusively as an occasional treat or snack—not a full meal replacement. Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake. Overfeeding treats—even healthy ones—can lead to nutrient imbalances or weight gain.

If your dog has known food sensitivities, allergies, digestive issues, or other health conditions (such as pancreatitis or kidney disease), consult your veterinarian before introducing this or any new food. Always introduce new foods gradually and monitor for signs of intolerance, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or itching.
