These Carob-Mint Cookies for Dogs Are Inspired By One of Your Favorite Treats

Is there anything better than tearing open a box of cookies you’ve been waiting all year to enjoy? Well, there is one thing: sharing that delicious moment with your fur baby! Of course, you should never give your dog even a bite of your favorite chocolate-mint cookies—chocolate is toxic to dogs, and the added sugar and artificial ingredients aren’t safe or healthy for them either. But you can treat your pup to something just as special: these homemade carob-mint cookies, crafted with canine wellness in mind.

Created by cookbook authors and Trunk Pop Dinners co-founders Marge Perry and David Bonom, these treats use 100% dog-safe ingredients—including carob instead of chocolate—to deliver rich flavor without risk. The addition of dried mint helps freshen your dog’s breath, making those post-cookie snuggles extra delightful. Carob-Mint Cookies DIY Dog Treat Recipe

Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons carob powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried mint
  • ½ of a large egg (about 2 tablespoons)
  • ¼ cup unsalted chicken broth
  • ¼ cup carob chips
  • 1½ teaspoons canola oil

Supplies

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Small bowl
  • Medium bowl
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Rolling pin
  • Spoons and icing spatula (or butter knife)
  • 1.5-inch round biscuit or cookie cutter

Yield & Timing

  • Yield: 12–15 cookies
  • Serving size: 1 cookie
  • Prep time: 30 minutes
  • Total time: 90 minutes

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, carob powder, and dried mint.
  2. In a small bowl, crack and whisk one large egg. Measure out exactly 2 tablespoons of the mixture (discard the remainder). Stir the 2 tablespoons of egg with the chicken broth until combined.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until a shaggy dough forms. Knead gently in the bowl 5–6 times until smooth and fully combined.
  4. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll it to a uniform ¼-inch thickness.
  5. Use your cookie cutter to cut out shapes, transferring each to the prepared baking sheet. Gather scraps, re-roll to ¼-inch thickness, and cut more cookies until you have 12–15 total.
  6. Bake in the center of the oven for 30–35 minutes, or until the cookies are firm to the touch. Remove from oven and cool completely on a wire rack—the cookies will crisp up further as they cool.
  7. Place carob chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on medium power in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until fully melted. Stir in the canola oil until the mixture is smooth, glossy, and evenly blended.
  8. Using a small spoon or spatula, spread a thin layer of melted carob over the top of each cooled cookie. Let stand for 30 minutes to set before serving.

How to Store

For food safety, refrigerate any leftover cookies within 1 hour of preparation. Consume within 3–4 days, or freeze in an airtight, freezer-safe container for up to 1 month.
