Las Vegas Animal Rescue Urgently Needs Fosters as Shelter Overflows

The Animal Foundation—Las Vegas Valley’s largest animal shelter and the highest-volume single-site shelter in the country—is facing a critical surge in intakes. Despite its capacity to care for thousands of animals each year, the facility has reached full occupancy and urgently needs community support to make space.

Since September 7, the shelter has taken in 153 dogs—pushing its kennels beyond safe capacity. Just days earlier, on September 4, nearly 90 cats arrived in a single day, including 30 surrendered from one overwhelmed household.

In 2024, The Animal Foundation saved more than 24,000 lost, homeless, and mistreated animals—an 18% increase over the previous year. But this month’s unprecedented influx has created an immediate crisis. “If you’ve been waiting for the right time to help, now is the time,” the organization stated on social media. “Fostering or adopting an animal today helps us make room in the shelter.”

To meet the demand, the shelter has expanded foster intake operations to seven days a week, opening daily at 8 a.m. Every temporary placement—whether for two weeks or two months—buys vital time and space for animals still arriving at the door.

How to Get Started Fostering

Becoming a foster parent with The Animal Foundation is simple and well-supported:

  • Submit a foster application online through furpetvo.com/foster.
  • Receive an automatic email with next steps—check your spam folder if it doesn’t appear.
  • Contact foster@furpetvo.com with questions or to confirm receipt.

Foster opportunities include:

  • Cats: Adult cats, kittens, and nursing mothers.
  • Dogs: Puppies, adult dogs, and senior companions.

Once approved, fosters can browse available animals directly on furpetvo.com/animals. Most placements last two weeks to two months—but the team works closely with each foster to match duration and needs to lifestyle and availability.

No special training is required—just compassion, consistency, and a safe, stable home. The Animal Foundation provides all essentials: food, medications, litter boxes, bowls, and toys. Foster parents must be at least 18 years old and cannot simultaneously foster for another organization (to ensure continuity of care and health monitoring). Families with existing pets are welcome—though separation space may be requested depending on the animal’s needs.

Adoptions Also Strongly Encouraged

While fostering addresses the most urgent need, adoption remains a powerful way to create lasting change. Adoptable dogs and cats are featured on furpetvo.com/adopt and listed across trusted platforms like FurPetVo. Prospective adopters are also invited to visit in person at 655 N Mojave Road.

Beyond sheltering, The Animal Foundation runs several community programs designed to keep pets in loving homes—including a free pet pantry, low-cost vaccine and microchip clinics, and affordable group training classes. These services help prevent future surrenders and strengthen the human–animal bond across Las Vegas.
