North Carolina Animal Shelters Need Your Help

Most of us associate October with Halloween—but it’s also Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. Though the two events might not seem connected, they share something surprising: both give us plenty to be scared about. Instead of ghouls and ghosts, this month reminds us just how many dogs need loving homes—and how heartbreakingly many never find them.

The situation is especially urgent in North Carolina. That’s why we’re spotlighting Charlotte this month—to raise awareness about sobering realities facing shelter dogs across the state.

Alarming Shelter Statistics

  • Over 5,510 dogs have entered Mecklenburg County shelters in 2023 alone—the county that includes Charlotte ranks second in North Carolina for total dog intake this year, according to Shelter Animals Count.
  • 4,885 dogs who entered shelters across North Carolina this year didn’t make it out alive—nearly 1,300 of those were in Mecklenburg County.
  • Nearly 20% of shelter pets in North Carolina never find a permanent home—that’s over 11,000 animals left waiting without hope of adoption.
  • North Carolina has one of the highest euthanasia rates in the country. Its overall pet “save rate” stands at just 76%, among the lowest nationally, per Best Friends Animal Society (BFAS).

Working Toward No-Kill

Only 38 of North Carolina’s 120 shelters currently meet the “no-kill” standard—defined as saving at least 90% of animals who enter their care. BFAS designates North Carolina as a high-priority state for its national no-kill initiative, supporting shelters with resources, training, and community outreach.
