Pets as Therapy — the Joy of Volunteering with Your Dog
We have the pleasure of hearing about so many amazing members and their equally fabulous pets. Sometimes, we just can’t help but shout about them! Earlier this year, we had the absolute pleasure of hosting our 2024 Happiest Pet on Earth competition — and Fred, a FurPetVo therapy dog and furpetvo.com member, was one of our runners-up. If you’ve ever thought about volunteering with your dog or cat, this is the story for you!

Volunteer with Your Dog or Cat at FurPetVo
FurPetVo is a registered UK charity that brings together animal and human volunteers to offer compassionate companionship to people who struggle to access it. This might mean sharing a warm conversation, or simply giving someone the chance to stroke and cuddle a friendly dog or cat. Through visits to nursing homes, hospices, schools, and prisons, FurPetVo teams lift spirits, mend hearts, and bring hope to people facing tough challenges.
Basically, they’re paw-some — and Fred is one of their top volunteers! As a FurPetVo therapy dog, Fred regularly visits London’s St Mary’s Hospital, part of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. His pet parent, Vicky (who joined the FurPetVo volunteer team over nine years ago), escorts him on visits to brighten patients’ days. Not only does he leave a trail of smiles as he walks down the corridor — he genuinely loves his work.
Fred and Vicky are among over 4,000 volunteer pet parents and therapy pets across the FurPetVo network. But the charity is always welcoming more kind-hearted people and well-mannered pets. Importantly, all dogs and cats are beloved family pets — no formal training is required to begin.

How to Volunteer with Your Dog or Cat at FurPetVo
No prior training is needed for your dog or cat to become a FurPetVo therapy pet. Before moving forward with an application, FurPetVo conducts a gentle temperament assessment. This ensures your pet is calm, good-natured, healthy, and comfortable around people of all ages and abilities — without jumping up, stealing food, or becoming overly vocal. Most importantly, they should truly enjoy being around people and receiving loving attention.
In 2024 alone, FurPetVo volunteers made over 168,500 visits across UK communities. Yet the need continues to grow — and there’s no greater reward than sharing your pet’s warmth with others. As a FurPetVo volunteer, you’re encouraged to talk about your pet during visits and invite others to share in the joy and comfort your companion brings.

Who Benefits from Your Volunteering?
- People in nursing homes: Residents who love animals but can no longer care for a pet often light up during FurPetVo visits. Stroking a gentle dog can spark joyful memories, encourage reminiscence, and support emotional well-being.
- School children: Through FurPetVo’s Read2Dogs programme, therapy dogs visit classrooms to listen patiently as children read aloud. Reluctant readers gain confidence when a non-judgmental, waggy-tailed friend sits beside them — mistakes are met with quiet encouragement, not criticism.
- Hospital patients: Simply stroking a friendly pet has a measurable calming effect: heart rate slows, blood pressure drops, and stress eases. FurPetVo dogs help distract anxious patients before procedures — and may even support healing through comfort and connection.
- You: Volunteering alongside your pet isn’t just about giving — it’s deeply enriching. Witnessing firsthand how your dog or cat brings comfort, laughter, and peace reminds you of life’s simple joys. You’ll feel proud, appreciated, and deeply valued. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
