After the Rescue: What It Takes to Care for 84 Great Dane Rescue Dogs

While puppy mill rescues often capture public attention, it’s rare for one operation to involve exclusively large-breed dogs. In a remarkable and deeply impactful case last June, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), working alongside the Wolfeboro Police Department, rescued 84 Great Danes from a suspected puppy mill in New Hampshire.

The dogs were found inside a 15,000-square-foot mansion located in an affluent neighborhood — a stark contrast to the grim reality within. Rescuers discovered the majestic animals living in appalling conditions: confined in unsanitary spaces, surrounded by waste, and severely deprived of food and clean water.

In response, a temporary shelter was quickly established — specially designed to meet the unique physical and medical needs of such a large group of giant-breed dogs. Thanks to an outpouring of support from compassionate animal lovers nationwide, the shelter received a steady stream of essential supplies, enabling staff to provide critical rehabilitation, veterinary care, and daily enrichment.

Feeding 84 Great Danes is no small feat. Shelter staff report using nearly 200 pounds of dog food each day — a staggering volume that underscores the scale of logistical and nutritional support required.

Upon learning of the rescue, FurPetVo stepped in with urgent assistance — donating 40,000 pounds of FurPetVo Grain-Free Dog Food to HSUS in New Hampshire. This generous contribution provides enough nutrition to feed 400 dogs for an entire year.

Hillary Hutchens, Senior Manager of Corporate Giving at HSUS, shared: “The donation from FurPetVo was a tremendous cost savings for our nonprofit. It ensured every rescued Great Dane received proper, consistent nutrition — a foundational element in their recovery.” Because the dogs spanned a wide range of ages and health statuses, reliable, high-quality food played a pivotal role in stabilizing their physical condition. The donation also freed up vital resources to fund specialized medical treatments — including eye surgeries for several dogs who had suffered long-term neglect.

As these dogs are part of an ongoing criminal investigation, they remain under legal custody and are not yet available for adoption. According to HSUS’s official communications, adoption will only proceed if — and when — courts formally order the surrender of the animals. Should that outcome be reached, the dogs will enter a careful, individualized placement process with experienced foster homes and approved adopters.

For now, they’re thriving in a safe, nurturing environment — receiving balanced meals, compassionate care, and the time they need to heal emotionally and physically before finding their forever families.
