Why Having References Will Help Secure Your Dream Sit (and How to Get Them)

In the world of pet sitting, trust is everything. When pet parents are searching for someone to care for their beloved animals—and welcome into their home—they need confidence in your character, reliability, and compassion. That’s where references come in. Adding strong, thoughtful references to your FurPetVo sitter profile isn’t just a formality—it’s one of the most powerful ways to stand out and land your dream sit.

What Is a FurPetVo Reference?

A FurPetVo reference is a verified character reference that appears prominently on the front of your sitter profile. It’s written by someone who knows you well—someone who can speak authentically about your integrity, kindness, responsibility, and everyday strengths.

With at least three references displayed, pet parents gain a well-rounded, real-world perspective on who you are—not just as a sitter, but as a person. Each reference includes a brief written endorsement plus a star rating (out of five) across five key traits: organized, reliable, self-sufficient, tidy, and pet care.

Why “External” References Matter

These references are called “external” because they come from people outside the FurPetVo platform—individuals who’ve known you for years, across different areas of your life. While feedback from past pet parents (reviews) is valuable, external references build deeper trust: they show consistency in your character over time and across contexts—whether as a neighbor, colleague, friend, or long-time community member.

Where Do References Appear?

Your references live right on the front of your FurPetVo profile—just below your photos and bio. They’re among the first things pet parents see when reviewing your profile. Since first impressions carry significant weight, having thoughtful, detailed references gives you an immediate advantage.

Why References Make a Real Difference

  • Higher success rate: Sitters with at least three references are 20% more likely to secure a sit.
  • Stronger trust signals: Pet parents need reassurance before opening their homes. References provide authentic, third-party validation of your values and behavior.
  • A more complete profile: A full, well-rounded profile tells a richer story—and makes you far more memorable and appealing to families seeking care.

Who Should You Ask?

Think beyond past clients—you’re gathering character references, not just service reviews. Ideal referees include:

  • A colleague who’s worked alongside you for several years
  • A neighbor who’s known you through daily interactions and community involvement
  • A longtime friend or family friend who can speak to your empathy and dependability
  • A former pet parent you’ve sat for (highly recommended—but aim for variety)

The key? Choose people who’ve known you for a meaningful length of time and can offer specific, heartfelt insights—not generic praise.

References vs. Reviews: What’s the Difference?

It’s easy to confuse the two—but they serve distinct, complementary roles:

  • References are external, character-based endorsements from people who know you personally. They highlight who you are at your core.
  • Reviews are internal, experience-based feedback from pet parents you’ve actually sat for. They reflect how you performed in real sittings—your communication, follow-through, and pet care skills.

For maximum impact, aim to collect both. Together, they paint a full, credible picture of your trustworthiness and professionalism.

How to Request a Reference

Getting started is simple:

  1. Log in to your furpetvo.com account.
  2. Navigate to My Profile (click your name or the menu icon in the top-right corner).
  3. Scroll down to the Your References section and click Add.
  4. Enter your referee’s first name and click Continue.
  5. Choose how to send the reference link—via email or copy-and-paste—and share it with your referee.

Once they submit their reference, it will appear on your profile after moderation. Pro tip: Follow up politely if you don’t hear back within a week—and always thank your referees personally. Their support helps open doors you may not even know are waiting.
