Owner Cleanliness Checklist

At FurPetVo, every member is expected to uphold high standards of cleanliness and communication during a house sit. Preparation makes all the difference — your pet sitter will truly appreciate the time and care you invest in leaving your home clean, welcoming, and ready for their stay.

Your Community Manager, Angela Laws — who’s experienced both sides of the pet sitting journey as an owner and a sitter — shares practical, heartfelt tips to help you host happy, safe, and successful sits, every time.

Cleanliness checklist

When opening your home to a trusted sitter, aim to leave it exactly as you’d hope to find it upon your return. Here’s a clear, 10-point checklist to guide your prep:

  • Dust all surfaces, vacuum carpets and rugs, and mop hard floors
  • Wash and put away any dirty laundry or bed linens before you leave
  • Empty all rubbish and recycling bins
  • Run the dishwasher (or hand-wash and neatly store all dishes)
  • Thoroughly clean the cooker, microwave, and cooking utensils — and don’t forget to place out clean tea towels!
  • Clear out the fridge: discard open or expired perishables, and create space for your sitter’s groceries
  • Deep-clean bathrooms and restock essentials like soap, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies
  • Wash pet beds, blankets, and food/water bowls
  • Top up pet supplies — food, treats, litter, toys — and keep them clearly labeled and easy to access
  • Check outdoor areas: tidy the garden, yard, and driveway so everything feels cared for

Auntie Angela’s top tip

“Clarity is kindness. Your sitter will feel more confident and comfortable when they know exactly what’s expected — like which items are dishwasher-safe or where to find spare keys. A thoughtful, detailed Welcome Guide (easily created in your FurPetVo dashboard) sets the tone for a smooth, stress-free stay. Remember: it’s your home, and clear, respectful communication helps ensure everyone has a positive experience.”

Care and consideration

Whether your sitter lives nearby or travels from across the country, small gestures go a long way toward making them feel genuinely welcome and valued.

Help them settle in by offering dedicated wardrobe space and a spot in the bathroom for toiletries — no one wants to live out of a suitcase! And if they’re arriving by car, be sure to discuss parking ahead of time. A reserved spot or visitor pass makes a real difference.

Auntie Angela’s top tip

“After a full day caring for pets, tending the garden, and keeping your home running smoothly, your sitter’s greatest comfort will be a warm shower and a restful night’s sleep. Prepare their bedroom thoughtfully: fresh bedding, clean towels, a chair for clothes, and quiet, peaceful surroundings — these little touches show deep appreciation and won’t be forgotten.”
