DIY Pill Pouches for Pets
Sometimes our pets need medication—especially as they enter their golden years. And, as many pet parents know, getting medicine into a reluctant dog or cat can be a real challenge. The solution? Create irresistible, homemade pill pouches your pet won’t be able to resist.

These DIY pill pouches work for both dogs and cats, and they’re made entirely from simple, wholesome ingredients you likely already have in your pantry—or can easily find at your local grocery store.
“Senior pets need more attention when it comes to meeting their nutritional needs,” says Sandra Mitchell, DVM, DABVP, owner of All Creatures Veterinary Services in Bangor, Maine. “And healthy treats like these, containing whole foods, meet that need perfectly.”
Turn medicine time into treat time with this easy-to-make recipe. Simply press the pill into the soft, pliable pouch, gently mold it closed, and serve. It’s an ideal way to disguise medication for picky eaters—and doubles as a nutritious, low-calorie treat for senior pets.
Note: The instructions below are written for dogs. For cats, simply make each pouch smaller—about half the size—to suit their mouth and appetite.
Ingredients
- ¾ cup old-fashioned oats
- ¼ cup canned pumpkin (plain, unsweetened)
- ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt (unsweetened, no artificial sweeteners)
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tbsp all-natural, pet-safe bone broth (garlic- and onion-free)
- 1 tsp unflavored gelatin powder
Supplies
- Food processor or blender
- Small mixing bowl
- Large mixing bowl
- Measuring spoons and cups
- Baking sheet
- Teaspoon
- Rubber spatula
- Mason jar for storage
Makes
- Yield: 18–20 treats
- Serving size: 1 treat
- Prep time: 25 minutes
- Cool time: 30 minutes
- Total time: 55 minutes
Instructions
- Grind ⅓ cup of the old-fashioned oats in a food processor or blender until finely powdered.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the oat powder with the canned pumpkin, Greek yogurt, and turmeric. Stir well until smooth and set aside.
- In a small bowl, whisk the gelatin powder into the bone broth for 1 minute, until fully dissolved.
- Pour the gelatin mixture into the large bowl with the oat-pumpkin mixture. Stir thoroughly until evenly combined.
- Refrigerate the mixture, uncovered, for 30 minutes—this helps it firm up just enough to handle easily.
- Using a teaspoon, scoop out portions and roll them into small balls. Lightly coat each ball in the remaining unground oats.
- Place the finished pouches in a clean mason jar. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week—or freeze for up to 3 months.
- When it’s time for medication, gently press the pill into the center of a pouch, then fold and pinch the edges to fully enclose it. Or offer it plain as a tasty, nutrient-rich treat.

For best results, always consult your veterinarian before introducing new ingredients—especially if your pet has allergies, sensitivities, or underlying health conditions. And remember: These pouches are designed to complement, not replace, professional veterinary care.
