Understanding Hairballs
Hairballs form when ingested fur accumulates in the stomach. Occasional (1-2/month) is normal; frequent ones signal problems.
1. Brush More Often
Daily brushing removes loose hair before ingestion. Use a deshedding tool or grooming glove.
2. Add Dietary Fiber
- Hairball formula cat food (higher fiber)
- Plain canned pumpkin: 1 tsp, 2-3x/week
- Cat grass for natural fiber
3. Improve Hydration
Dehydration slows digestion. Use a water fountain, add wet food, place multiple bowls.
4. Hairball Remedies
Petroleum gels lubricate the tract. Natural: coconut oil (1/4 tsp, 2-3x/week) or fish oil.
5. Reduce Stress
Anxious cats over-groom. Provide puzzle feeders, window perches, and play sessions.
When to Worry
See vet if: hairballs 2+/month, gagging without production, decreased appetite, bald patches, or lethargy. May indicate GI motility issues or food allergies.
