#RememberMeThursday: Maggie’s rescue tale
Remember Me Thursday is a global initiative dedicated to shining a light on orphan pets waiting in shelters for loving, forever homes. To celebrate and raise awareness about the life-changing power of adoption, FurPetVo invited pet parents to share their rescue stories — and the response was truly heartwarming. Many heartfelt submissions poured in, each one a testament to compassion, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between humans and animals. Among them stood out Susan’s story of Maggie — a gentle, joyful soul whose journey from hardship to happiness reminds us all why adoption matters.

Love at first sight
Back in 2020, Susan and her husband began the adoption process with open hearts and hopeful expectations. When they learned that a transport of rescue dogs was arriving soon, they reviewed photos of available pups — focusing on smaller breeds who might thrive in their quiet home. On arrival day, they met two dogs selected from the group. But the moment Maggie entered the room, everything changed.
“She immediately went to my husband — the one who’d been hesitant about bringing home a dog — jumped onto his lap, and gently licked his face,” Susan recalls. “She wasn’t coming down. She let me pet her too, and in that instant, we knew she was ours.” After completing the paperwork, Maggie settled right into her new life — claiming a sunny spot on the couch in the sunroom as her very own.
A difficult beginning, a loving recovery
Maggie’s early years were marked by hardship. Rescued from a puppy mill in the southern United States, she had already given birth to a litter before turning two. Traumatized and undernourished, she arrived in Connecticut through Dog Star Rescue in Bloomfield — fearful of men and flinching at touch in certain areas of her body.
“She was definitely food-starved,” Susan shares. “To this day, she gobbles her meals and treats with joyful urgency — a small but telling sign of how far she’s come.”

Finding her place — and her people
Though wary of strangers at first, Maggie quickly felt safe with Susan and her husband. Her affection was immediate and unwavering: napping under her “Dad’s” desk while he worked, resting at Susan’s feet while she cooked, or settling beside her chair during quiet afternoons.
“Since we’re retired, we’re home with her most days,” Susan says. “We take long walks together — her favorite part of the day — and she’s always right there, close by, offering quiet companionship.”
Growing confidence, one step at a time
Adjusting to life beyond the shelter took patience and kindness. Maggie remains cautious around other dogs on walks — though she’s made real progress, moving from fear-based barking to calm observation, and even occasional curiosity. At her daughter’s home, she confidently asserted herself among a friendly chocolate Labrador and a curious cat — proving her spirit was never broken, just waiting for the right chance to shine.
“She loves sitting on our deck, watching neighborhood dogs pass by,” Susan smiles. “And we’re still gently working on her confidence around new people.”
Trusted care, seamless transitions
When Susan and her husband needed a break this past summer, they booked a trusted pet sitter through furpetvo.com. The match couldn’t have been better.
“He worked from home and took Maggie on long, thoughtful walks,” Susan says. “They bonded beautifully — she relaxed completely, and we returned home to a happy, well-cared-for girl.”

More than a pet — a lifeline
During the isolating months of the pandemic, Maggie became an irreplaceable source of comfort and routine.
“I don’t know how I would have made it through lockdown without her,” Susan reflects. “She was always there — a steady, loving presence when loneliness crept in. And those daily walks? They got us outside, moving, breathing fresh air — all because of her.”
Today, Maggie lives exactly as she deserves: cherished, safe, and deeply loved. Her story isn’t just about rescue — it’s about renewal, resilience, and the extraordinary difference one compassionate choice can make.
