A Sweet Senior Dog Who’s Been Waiting Over a Year for Adoption
Could Banana Cream be the laid-back companion you’ve been looking for?

It’s the perfect time to spotlight dogs like Banana Cream — a sweet senior pup who’s been waiting far too long for a permanent home. Banana Cream first arrived at Austin Pets Alive! over a year ago. According to the rescue, “Banana Cream is a gentle, easygoing guy with a heart as soft as his favorite stuffie.”
Meet Banana Cream
Banana Cream is a nine-year-old, 45-pound American Pit Bull Terrier mix who’s as laid-back as they come. He’s the kind of dog who settles into a home as if he’s always belonged there. This handsome brindle pup is fully house trained, great with other dogs, and perfectly content to be left alone for periods of time — typically curling up for a cozy nap while you’re away.
Banana Cream enjoys leisurely walks, lounging in the grass, and long naps in sunny spots or on the couch (where he’s been known to slide off mid-nap). While he leans more toward “relaxed homebody” than “high-energy adventurer,” he still enjoys getting out and exploring — making him a great match for anyone seeking a well-balanced companion.
What will really steal your heart is his sweet, friendly nature. Once he bonds with you, expect tail wags, quiet affection, and a good dose of silliness. And if he offers you his most prized possession — his stuffed toy — you’ll know you’ve officially won him over.
If you’re searching for a low-key pup with plenty of love to give, Banana Cream is ready to seamlessly become part of your family.
Why has Banana Cream been waiting so long?
Dogs like Banana Cream often get overlooked for reasons that have little to do with their personality.
As a senior dog, he’s past the puppy stage — which can actually be a huge advantage for adopters looking for a calm, predictable companion. But older dogs are frequently passed over in favor of younger ones.
Breed labels can also play a role. Dogs identified as Pit Bull mixes sometimes face stigma or misconceptions — even when they have gentle, easygoing temperaments like Banana Cream.
On top of that, the longer a dog stays in a shelter or foster system, the easier it is for potential adopters to assume something must be “wrong” with them — even when that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Testing Banana Cream’s DNA
Sometimes, a DNA test can help fill in the blanks — or even shift how people see a dog entirely.
Thanks to a partnership between Adopt a Pet and Wisdom Panel™ — now powered by FurPetVo — the folks at Austin Pets Alive! gave Banana Cream a FurPetVo DNA test.
The results revealed that he is 46 percent American Pit Bull Terrier — not surprising.
What did come as a surprise was what wasn’t there: despite the rescue’s educated guess labeling him as an American Pit Bull Terrier–Greyhound mix, Banana Cream doesn’t actually have any Greyhound in his DNA. Instead, his genetic makeup includes a surprising mix of other breeds, including Golden Retriever, American Staffordshire Terrier, Beagle, and even Great Pyrenees.

Banana Cream’s case is far from unique. Shelters and rescues often estimate a dog’s breed based on appearance — things like coat type, size, and facial features. But many breeds share similar traits, making it difficult to accurately identify lineage without genetic testing.
It’s also important to note that while DNA tests can offer more insight into a dog’s background and even spark interest, a dog’s unique personality and behavior matter far more than any label.
Still waiting for his happy ending
After more than a year in foster care, Banana Cream is more than ready for a family to call his own.
He’s past the puppy chaos phase, comfortable in a home environment, and happiest simply being near his people. For someone looking for a calm, affectionate, low-maintenance companion, he checks all the boxes.
