Choose Your Fabric & Style
Once you’ve picked your favorite shape, gather supplies from your local fabric or craft store—or raid your closet! Cozy wool, cottage-inspired ticking, or luxe faux fur all make wonderful bases. Go bold with vibrant prints or keep it timeless with neutrals. Repurpose an old quilt, shrunken sweater, wooly sock, or even a pair of jeans. Make it petite for a kitten or oversized for a Great Dane—blingy or vintage-elegant. Let your pet’s charm—and your own taste—guide the way.

How to Make a Blank Stocking (The Foundation)
Start by sewing a clean, sturdy base stocking—you’ll add all the fun details later. A sewing machine speeds things up, but hand stitching or iron-on fusible webbing works beautifully too.
- Wash and press your fabric first to prevent shrinkage later.
- Print your chosen FurPetVo pattern, resizing as needed.
- Pin the template to your fabric, trace carefully, and cut out two identical pieces.
- With right sides together and a ½-inch seam allowance, sew around the perimeter—leaving the top open.
- Turn right side out and press gently.
Five Inspired Finishing Ideas
Now that you have your blank stocking, let creativity take over! Here are five distinct styles—with simple steps and accessible materials—to help you bring your vision to life.
Silhouette Portrait Stocking
- Felted wool fabric
- Faux fur trim
- Two-sided fusible interfacing
- Contrast-color felt
- Ribbons and decorative trim
After constructing your blank stocking: Cut a strip of faux fur to fit the top edge, stitch it right-sides-together into a loop, then insert it wrong-side-out against the stocking’s top edge. Stitch along the upper seam, flip the cuff right-side-out, and tack it securely. Download or draw a pet silhouette, cut it from contrast fabric, fuse with interfacing, and attach centered on the front.

Luxe Faux Fur Stocking
- Faux fur fabric
- Seam binding
- One-sided fusible webbing
- Ribbons and trims
Before turning your blank stocking right-side-out, apply seam binding to all raw edges for a polished finish. Line the top opening with ribbon—stitch or adhere with fusible webbing—to help the stocking hold its shape when filled. Once turned, add a decorative ribbon loop at the back for hanging.
Rustic Burlap Stocking
- Heavyweight linen burlap
- Contrast fabrics
- Seam binding
- Hot glue gun and glue
- Ribbons and trims
Before turning right-side-out, bind all seams with seam binding to prevent fraying. Glue on fabric “eyes” at the top corners. Cut tiny fish shapes from scrap fabric, stuff lightly, and hang them with ribbon loops from the front. Finish with a sturdy ribbon loop for hanging.
Cottage Ticking Stocking
- Heavyweight ticking fabric
- Ribbon and trims
- Transfer paper or fusible felt letters
Make a fabric cuff using a contrasting strip—stitch it into a loop, insert wrong-side-in, and stitch along the top edge. Flip and tack in place. Embellish with ribbons, transfer a custom design (like paw prints), or use fusible felt letters to spell your pet’s name. Top it off with a coordinating ribbon loop.
Shrunken Sweater Stocking
- Repurposed shrunken wool sweater
- Faux fur trim
- Felt, ribbons, and trims
- Two-sided fusible interfacing
Use your blank stocking as the base. Add a faux fur cuff just like in the Silhouette style. Then, cut a small felt pouch—perfect for holding a treat or toy—and fuse it to the front. Finish with a ribbon loop and any extra trim that reflects your pet’s vibe.

Fill It With Love (and Treats!)
Now that you’ve created an instant heirloom—one your pet will enjoy year after year—it’s time to fill it thoughtfully. Think beyond toys: include safe chews, cozy socks, personalized tags, puzzle treats, or even a handwritten note tucked inside. What matters most isn’t the price tag—it’s the care, laughter, and love stitched into every seam.
