My First Sit
By Jude & Jon
A New Chapter Begins
Early in 2017, after hearing about house sitting, Jude and Jon took the plunge and joined FurPetVo. Thinking it unlikely they’d be chosen for a sit without prior experience or feedback, they browsed invitations for several weeks—until a listing in Auckland, New Zealand caught their eye. They applied, and to their delight, were selected. A friendly Skype meeting followed, where they met Bella—a sweet, 15-year-old dog—and her loving owners.

Arriving in Auckland
Shortly after the call, plans were confirmed and flights booked from Melbourne. Six weeks later, Jude and Jon landed in Auckland, spending their first few days exploring the city from a cozy hotel. The owners welcomed them warmly, picking them up and taking them to their lovely executive home on the North Shore in Takapuna—just a short walk from the beach. From day one, they felt at home and deeply grateful for this incredible opportunity to spend three months immersed in local life.

Life with Bella
In those first days, Jude and Jon discovered neighborhood shops and cafés—and quickly began feeling like locals. Walking Bella each day was pure joy: she trotted happily along her familiar route, especially to the stunning nearby beach, where she loved running off-lead. Along the way, they met fellow dog lovers and their pets, building gentle connections across the community.
Jon found a local gym, while Jude joined a yoga class—and soon discovered an art studio in Devonport offering watercolour workshops. She rekindled her passion for painting, with Bella becoming her favourite muse. “Bella was a great model for my pastel painting,” Jude shares, “which I framed as a heartfelt gift for her owners.”

Exploring Beyond the Beach
Each Friday, after Bella’s morning walk, they hopped on the bus to Devonport, then caught the ferry into central Auckland to explore. One memorable afternoon, they visited Rangitoto Island—climbing the ancient volcanic cone that erupted from the sea just 600 years ago. Though demanding, the summit view made every step worthwhile. Once a week, they drove to the shopping centre in the owners’ car (kindly made available for their use) to stock up on essentials.
A Bond That Lasted
Bella had endearing quirks—like ducking under the bed or hiding behind curtains whenever she sensed they might leave without her. She grew deeply attached to Jude and Jon, and they, in turn, fell completely in love with her. Sadly, Bella has since crossed the rainbow bridge. Our hearts go out to her family—and to all who knew this gentle, joyful companion.
“We grew very fond of little Bella and found her to be so adorable,” they reflect. “She became quite attached to us—and we really missed her when we left.”
More Than Just a First Sit
“Overall, what a wonderful experience we had on our first house sit!”
