German Shepherd Abandoned at Walmart With His Toys Has People Heartbroken
A German Shepherd named Maverick was found abandoned outside a Walmart in Hesperia, California—with a box of his favorite toys beside him. The heartbreaking scene moved countless people online and sparked an urgent rescue effort led by pet photographer Leanna Ayala.

The Discovery
Leanna Ayala discovered Maverick lying quietly near the store entrance. In a viral Instagram video, she shared that he had waited there for three days before animal control arrived. Despite his distress, Maverick remained calm, sweet, and docile—allowing strangers to approach and pet him.
“He was calm, sweet, and docile when he was on the street,” Ayala said in the video. “They even assured me that he’s friendly and lets them pet him.” Yet due to signs of fear and stress, shelter staff labeled him as “rescue only” and placed him on the euthanasia list.
A Community Comes Together
Ayala immediately launched a campaign to save Maverick—posting updates, sharing his story, and urging followers to spread the word before it was too late. Her efforts resonated widely: the video garnered over 300,000 views, and donations poured in from supporters across the country.
Thanks to this outpouring of compassion—and Ayala’s tireless advocacy—Maverick secured a foster-to-adopt placement in Washington state.

A New Beginning
On May 5, Maverick officially left the shelter and began his journey to Washington. Ayala shared the joyful news in the comments of her original post: “Maverick has officially left the shelter and is now being transported to WA, where he will live his best life 💗🥹. This literally took a village!!!! I couldn’t have done this without you!”
She described his transformation as “a rollercoaster—from abandoned at Walmart with all his toys, to a new life in WA 💗.” And she emphasized what mattered most: “Maverick has been through so much in such a short time. Thanks to all of you, we were able to get him out of the shelter before being euthanized!! 🥹”
