These homemade minty dog treats will help keep the doggy breath at bay (and your pup will love the tasty treat).

The Petcare Hub Test Kitchen team includes culinary specialists, food stylists, nutrition professionals, and other experts with Bachelor of Science degrees in food science, food and nutrition, or culinary arts. Together, the team tests and retests, produces, styles, and photographs recipes in our state-of-the-art test kitchen facility—often calling on their furry family members to taste-test recipes before we photograph and publish them.

Alicen Tracey, DVM

Dr. Tracey grew up loving animals on a hobby farm, and vowed to be a vet by 4 years old. She loves surrounding herself with animals whether it be at work in a small animal hospital in Iowa, or caring for her three dogs (including Jefferson, pictured), and two cats. She loves general practice as she gets to practice medicine through many different facets, but particularly enjoys preventative care, cardiology, emergency medicine, geriatric, and end of life care.

All pet parents know the pain of getting a big kiss on the face from your dog, just to find out their breath absolutely reeks. In addition to a consistent teeth brushing regimen, these homemade mint dog treats made with oats, applesauce, and a touch of fresh mint leaves can help ease that doggy breath. Whether you're a baker at heart or simply just want to stray away from store-bought treats, these homemade fresh breath dog treats are the way to go. With seven ingredients and a total prep and baking time of only 40 minutes, your pooch will be on their way to better breath in no time.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup regular rolled oats
  • 1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped parsley*
  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped mint*

Directions

Step OnePreheat oven to 350°F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside. Place oats in a food processor. Cover and process until oats are almost flour consistency with a few big pieces left, about 30 seconds.

Step TwoIn a large bowl, combine oats, flour, applesauce, canola oil, egg, parsley, and mint. Stir together until a dough forms.

Step ThreeTurn dough out onto a well-floured surface and roll to 1/8-inch thick. Using a 1-inch round cookie cutter, cut out the treats. Re-roll scraps as needed. Arrange treats on prepared pans.

Step FourBake 20 to 25 minutes or until treats are dry to the touch and bottoms are light golden. Cool completely on pan before serving or storing.

*Dogs should consume mint and parsley only in very small amounts. Limit to one treat per day.

Storage: Transfer completely cooled treats to an airtight container or resealable plastic bag. Store in the refrigerator up to 1 week or freeze up to 3 months. Thaw before serving.
