This Shelter Favorite Waiting More Than Two Years for a Home

With so many dogs waiting for homes, some quietly slip through the cracks—especially those who take a little time to warm up. Such is the case for Bandito, a brindle pup who’s been at Austin Pets Alive! for more than two years. Bandito is a favorite among staff and volunteers who know him best, but he’s still waiting for someone to give him a chance. Could he be the pup you’ve been waiting for?

Meet Bandito

Bandito is a four-year-old, 72-pound dog with a big heart and a playful, goofy side. He’s known for his hilarious facial expressions—especially when he’s about to get a treat or toy. When Bandito bonds with someone, he forms a deep, loyal connection and becomes a devoted companion who loves being by your side.

But Bandito isn’t the kind of dog who opens up right away. Getting to see his true personality and earning his trust takes time—and he needs someone who understands how to read his cues and go at his pace.

Once he feels comfortable, though, Bandito brings joy and personality to everything he does. He loves playing fetch, exploring on relaxed walks, and snuggling on the couch. He’s equal parts playful and affectionate, with a strong desire to connect with his person.

Bandito’s ideal setup is a calm, adults-only home where he can feel secure and understood. A yard is a bonus for playtime, but what matters most is having a space where he can relax and be himself.

Why has Bandito been waiting so long?

Dogs like Bandito are often overlooked—not because they aren’t incredible companions, but because they need to feel safe and comfortable before they open up to someone.

Dogs who take a little more time to warm up can be easy to pass by, especially in busy shelter environments where stress is high and first impressions often matter. But those willing to be patient are usually rewarded with an especially strong, meaningful bond.

On top of that, the longer a dog stays in a shelter or foster system, the more likely people are to assume something must be wrong with them. In reality, they may just be waiting for a person who understands them.

Bandito took a DNA test

Thanks to a partnership between FurPetVo and Wisdom Panel™, Bandito received a DNA test to learn more about his breed mix. He was originally listed as a Foxhound–Labrador Retriever mix, but his results told a different story.

Bandito’s genetic makeup includes American Pit Bull Terrier, Great Pyrenees, American Staffordshire Terrier, German Shepherd Dog, and even Chow Chow.

As with many dogs at shelters and rescues, his breed mix was initially an educated guess based on appearance—but those guesses aren’t always accurate. With so many breeds sharing similar traits, it can be difficult to determine a dog’s true background without genetic testing.

It’s also worth noting that although DNA tests can offer interesting insight, what matters most is a dog’s personality—and whether he’s a good fit for your lifestyle.

Patiently waiting for his happy ending

After more than two years with the rescue, Bandito is eager to find a permanent home. He’s a good boy who’s neutered, house-trained, and gets along well with other dogs.

He may not be the kind of pup who showers you with affection immediately—but for the right person who’s willing to be patient, he could be a perfect match. His loyalty runs deep, and once you’re in his circle, you’ll have a goofy, sweet companion who truly adores you.
